Frequently Asked Questions
Is acupuncture painful: no acupuncture is generally pain free, there is a needling sensation though that is important to attain called De Qi, which is like a dull aching sensation that passes within a few seconds of being attained, this is very important to attain De Qi for the treatment to be of benefit to the patient.
Is acupuncture safe: Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of treatment, all qualified acupuncturists are bound by the Skin Penetration act, which means when you first make an appointment with an Acupuncturist it is important to establish whether they are a member of an association of proffessionals such as the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association, (AACMA) the members are bound to adhere strictly to the guide lines set out in the Skin Penetration act, such as cleanliness before and after treatments, alcohol swabs to be used at all times before and after treatments, a wooden floor in the treatment room, a hand basin in the treatment room, a sharps container in the treatment rooms.
How do I know if the Acupuncturist is qualified:Unfortunately there are a lot of people who claim to be acupuncturists, but in reality have only done at best minimal training courses and are not members of proffessional associations that represent Acupuncturists and Chinese medicine practitioners, that is why it is most important to make sure the person you are making an acupuncture appointment with is fully qualified and has had at least 5 years full time training and meets the requirements of the national health funds as a practitioner.
