Acupuncture: The Therapeutic Treatment Option for Threatened Miscarriage

Acupuncture: The Therapeutic Treatment Option for Threatened Miscarriage
19 Sep 2014

Most of the miscarriages take place within first three months of pregnancy. A miscarriage is a spontaneous loss of pregnancy before eight months and in Northern Beaches this is something that is happening hundreds of time every year. In fact about 10%-20% of confirmed pregnancies are seen to end this way.

The phrase ‘threatened miscarriage’ refers to the presence of the warning signs, which may point out that a miscarriage is possible. In the early months of pregnancy these indications may be persistent light staining or vaginal bleeding or/and pain in lower back or lower abdomen. After three months of pregnancy, typical symptoms would be scanty brown or prolonged pink discharge as well as heavy bleeding along with cramping pain. All kinds of vaginal bleeding however don’t necessarily indicate a threatened miscarriage.

Threatened Miscarriage and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Conventional medicine doesn’t offer much in healing or preventing a threatened miscarriage. TCM however offers help in this sphere.  The treatment of TCM starts with a detailed consultation with the practitioner so that he or she gets a clear idea about what’s happening to the Qi of lower abdomen and uterus of the patient.

From the viewpoint of Traditional Chinese Medicine, miscarriage may take place either because:

  • There is excessive heat in blood, which destabilizes the embryo making miscarriage more probable
  • There is insufficiency of Qi. A function of Qi is to hold the things in place. In context of pregnancy, it’s the Qi of lower abdomen that holds foetus in the place.

TCM treatment usually involves acupuncture for either strengthening the Qi or clearing the heat from system. Dietary suggestions are even given in most of the cases-in the first case it is important to eat food, which nourishes Qi and in the second one to avoid all the food items, which cause heating up of the body.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is a very safe form of treatment if done by a qualified practitioner. In fact, nowadays a lot of pregnant women in Northern Beaches are having acupuncture treatment.
