How Acupuncture Helps Support IVF Treatment?

How Acupuncture Helps Support IVF Treatment?
13 Aug 2014

If you are a woman  undergoing IVF, you might have heard that acupuncture combined with IVF or In Vitro Fertilization helps in increasing the chance of a successful pregnancy. In fact nowadays many women in Australia are having successful results using acupuncture to complement IVF cycle. Even a recent study conducted found out that acupuncture improved the success rate of pregnancy by fifty to sixty five percent in women who had undergone IVF treatment.  But how does this 3000 year old medicine help in supporting IVF?

As per the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), malfunction and disease in the body actually result from blockage in flow of blood and energy (Qi). By getting these blockages removed and restoring a normal smooth flow of Qi and Blood, the human body basically restores health and optimal function of the reproductive organs. Through use of Chinese herbs and hair like thin needles, acupuncturists find and remove the blockages of Qi and Blood , allowing the organs and tissues to heal and function normally.

TCM generally treats the body as a whole. When any woman gets treated with acupuncture for fertility, her health is entirely taken into consideration. Through restoration of smooth flow of Qi and Blood   within the body, her overall health will improve and she will definitely respond better to IVF process.

Researchers in Australia have found  that acupuncture helps in:

  • Reducing the stress hormones, which interfere with ovulation
  • Normalizing the hormones, which regulate ovulation releasing an egg
  •  Increasing the flow of blood to uterus, thus improving chances of embryo implantation

So, stress is one of the factors contributing to conception difficulties and infertility, and acupuncture is the treatment that can reduce stress to a great extent. It is through acupuncture that endorphins (the chemicals, which the body releases) are released in the brain, which actually suppresses pain naturally and affect hormones, which influence menstrual cycle. Acupuncture even influences the levels of LH and FSH and helps regulate the levels of Eostrogen and Progesterone. It has been found to regulate communication between ovaries and brain.

Acupuncture and the Chinese Herbal Medicine aim in promoting the maturation and growth of the ovarian follicles and induce ovulation. If used in conjunction with In Vitro Fertilization, Chinese medicine improves quality of the follicles. Blood flow through uterine artery and endometrial thickness are crucial for embryo implantation during IVF transfer stage. With an effect on nervous system, TCM can contribute by dilating blood vessels and uterine arteries, thus increasing the flow of blood to endometrium. When the endometrial lining is healthy, chances of successful implantation as well as healthy pregnancy are actually increased.

Acupuncture is affordable, non-toxic and is without any side effects. It is used increasingly as a successful complement to IVF. Here at Northside Acupuncture, I deal with a lot of women who are undergoing IVF cycles. I have many years of experience in providing IVF support on the Northern Beaches. After all, Northside Acupuncture is regarded as one of I.V.F Australia’s Prefered Practitioners.
