Hot flushes, night sweats, aches and pain are all common menopausal symptoms. These symptoms can be seen when hormonal changes take place in your body. This can have an effect on your work and life. Treating them with the help of pharmaceutical drugs can result in one or more acute to severe side effects. Fortunately, the discomforts can also be cured through a traditional method of treatment called acupuncture. When you choose to undergo the treatment of acupuncture, these symptoms can be relieved with ease.
Acupuncture treatment is safe for women and, in fact, studies have proven that it is very fruitful in treating menopausal symptoms in women.
The effectiveness acupuncture
The origin of acupuncture is China. An acupuncturist inserts thin sterile needles in the skin at specific points on the body via which qi, or vital energy, runs. These points are known as acupoints. Some of the points are Quchi LI-11, Guanyuan Ren-4 and Sanyinjiao SP-6. The needles are kept inserted for about 20 minutes to stimulate the energy. Endorphins, which are natural painkillers in a human being are released during this period. Acupuncture not only controls pain, but it can also increase the blood flow, which helps to bring back the energy into balance. This can be very useful for alleviating symptoms of menopause.
Treating menopausal symptoms
- Hot flushes – Hot flushes can be cured using the following acupuncture points: Moxibustion of Quchif LI-11 with electro-acupuncture, stimulation of Guanyuan Ren-4, and Sanyinjiao SP-6.
- Depression and anxiety – Patients are treated with moxibustion and acupuncture with slanted insertion and manipulation at the point of excitation of qi. Moxa sticks are used to warm up the points, with each session lasting for 20 minutes.
- Joint pain – Joint problems are common symptoms of menopause. The treatment differs on the condition of the patient and are treated on a weekly basis. Most of the women get relief from severe joint pains after undergoing this treatment.
- Hormonal levels – The outcome of acupuncture treatment results in changing of various hormonal levels such as: increased oestrogen oestradiol, stimulated thyroid hormone (TSH), cholesterol and testosterone. Monthly treatment is required to maintain the benefits of the treatment.
Effects on endorphins –
Women receiving genuine treatments experience an increased reduction in the intensity of hot flushes and mood swings. The effect on endorphins curbs away flushes by stabilising the temperature in the body.
This shows that acupuncture treatment is one of the best methods of minimising menopausal symptoms.
