Role of Acupuncture During Pregnancy, Birth & Immediate Postpartum Periods
06 Mar 2015

According to the TCM theory, vital energy known as Qi circulates in the body along the fourteen main energy pathways called meridians, each one linking to a particular internal organ and the organ systems. On every meridian, there are some points that function to re-establish the right energy flow. So, when any physical injury, emotional conflict, mental stress or pain occurs, the natural and healthy flow of Qi is impeded within the meridian system. Acupuncture is the only process at this time that can stimulate and balance the energy of the body for restoring health. It is the process of inserting sterile, thin needles into the specific points on the meridian. It is safe to use at the time of pregnancy as well as while breastfeeding, but only if the needles used is sterile and disposable.

During pregnancy: A woman generally undergoes a lot of physical and emotional changes during pregnancy. But most of these changes are regarded 'par for the course' because they cannot be alleviated easily using western medicine. In fact, there are many pharmaceuticals that cannot be used at the time of pregnancy, which, if used could have made the conditions better. At this time, complementary therapies like acupuncture are basically considered to be beneficial for treating these conditions. Acupuncture doesn't actually introduce any kind of substance into the body and so it is best suited for treating these conditions during pregnancy.

The health conditions, which can be treated with acupuncture at the time of pregnancy include:

  • Morning sickness
  • Threatened miscarriage
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Breech presentation
  • Sciatica/back pain
  • Labor induction

During labour & delivery: It has been observed for the last few years that the treatment of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in Northern Beaches have provided immense physical as well as emotional support to women during labour and delivery phase. As per the reports, the effects of support include labours being shorter, complications being fewer, reduction is caesarean rates and many more. As a result, the mother's have a very satisfying birth experience.

The health conditions which can be treated with acupuncture at this phase include:

  • Pain management
  • Back pain
  • Cervical ripening
  • Increase in the contraction strength as well as frequency
  • Fear and anxiety
  • Exhaustion
  • After childbirth

Giving birth is a real shock to the new mother's system. It takes about six weeks time for any woman to recover after giving birth. A lot of postpartum symptoms often develop during this phase. Sometimes, some symptoms even persist. To help replenish as well as restore the balance in a woman's body, acupuncture has been found to be very helpful. It can treat the following postpartum conditions:

  • Blocked ducts
  • Postpartum depression
  • Insufficient supply of breast milk or breast milk not flowing
  • Incontinence
  • Haemorrhoids
