What is Insomnia and How to Treat It ?

Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder. About forty percent of adults suffer from this. It’s usually believed that ten to fifteen percent of adult suffer from chronic insomnia and an additional twenty-five to thirty-five percent have occasional or transient insomnia.

There are many reasons that can cause insomnia to happen. Emotional stress, depression, alcohol use, physical discomfort, CNS disease, bipolar disorder, menopause, gastro esophageal reflux disease, congestive heart failure, poor sleep hygiene and taking too much of nicotine and caffeine may be some of the reasons of insomnia.

Symptoms of insomnia include difficulty in falling asleep, sustained awakenings, persistent sleepiness despite enough sleep, excessive dreaming and nightmares and early morning awakening. Patients having insomnia may even feel tensed, lazy, tired or have delayed reactions, headache or distraction. A serious consequence of insomnia may be mental illness and schizophrenia is the worst among all.

The disorder can be treated with herbal therapy, medications, physical or psychologic therapy. The medications that are commonly used include hypnotic sedative agents like benzodiazepines and zaleplon but they can cause adverse effects like drug resistance, memory damage, addiction and dependency.

There are also many more things that you can do to get your sleep back:

  • Avoid watching TV or using computer 1-2 hours before going to sleep
  • Eat the last meal of the day 2-3 hours before going to the bed so that digestion is not hampered
  • Do exercise regularly. Walking vigorously for about 30 minutes is enough.
  • Avoid substances which affect sleep like alcohol, caffeine and sugar
  • Keep to a regular bedtime. Turn off the lights by 10 pm and not after 11 pm.
  • Eat complex carbohydrates, lean protein and plenty of vegetables for stabilizing your blood sugar. Low blood sugar is often the reason why people wake up in the mid of night
