Womens fertility issues, most women take it for granted, that when they feel the time is right for them to start a family, there won't be any problems, in most instances this is true, but sadly for some women this is not always the case. There are a number of reasons that contribute to this situation, it can be something minor in the womans monthly cycle, or there can be major problems as well, it can be external problems, just the stress of modern day living, work or play can have a profound effect on the ability to concieve.
Northside Acupuncture has taken a particular interest in working with patients with fertility isues in this area of womens health for a number of years,Robert worked and studied in the Gyneacology Department at the Jiangxi University Hospital in Nanchang city, Peoples Republic of China, under the well know Professor Yang, she has had over fifty years experience in womens health, Robert was privelledged to have been taught by this wonderful woman, very few westerners gain access to such a wealth of knowledge. The knowledge gained in China is encorporated in to Roberts treatment regimes used in the clinic for the treatment of Womens fertility issues.
Some STD's or sexually transmitted diseases can go undetected for years, causing problems with conception. A blood test for any STDS and any other physiological problems is recommended before attempting to concieve.
ABSENT PERIODS (Amenorrhoea) also signify an imbalance in your body's condition and have been associated with long-term changes such as osteoporosis. A thorough diagnosis will determine your particular pattern of disharmony and herbs and/or acupuncture may help to address this imbalance, often helping the resumption of a normal cycle.
Conception Problems can result from blockages, weakness or toxicity. Looking at a chart of your menstruation and daily body temperature, we can tailor your treatment which may help with ovulation, which may help enrich the uterine lining by increaseing circulation of blood. The number of women that I see for this sometimes quite distressing problem is increasing every month, most leave the clinic after a consultation and treatment, reasured that this is a problem that may be rectified in most instances with a little help.I also work in conjunction with IVF clinics, and the Acupuncture treatments used before and after collection and transfers may be beneficial to the woman undergoing an IVF cycle, most IVF clinics will are happy for their clients to have acupuncture as a supplementary treatment during their IVF cycles.
I see a number of women each week who are trying to fall pregnant, one of the first things I request is for the husband to see their GP and ask for a referral to have a sperm test done at one of the laboratories that provide this service. It is surprising the number of reports that come back showing that the problem is not with the wife but that the husband has a low sperm count and that the viability and motility of the sperm are very low as well.Unfortunately in a lot of instances there is a reluctance on the part of the husband to under go this simple Sperm Test that takes just a few minutes of his time. I feel that there is some perceived threat to their masculinity and that they are somewhat diminished in the eyes of their partner if the results indicate that not all is right with them.In most instances the problem may be rectified, diet and lifestyle can have a bearing on the quality of sperm, smoking and alcohol also are problems that need to be addressed, a complete assessment of the husbands lifestyle and dietary habits are undertaken, then a herbal formula is prescribed to address the underlying deficiency, along with acupuncture treatments over a 6 months period, the results may surprise the husband when a second sperm test is done.I can not stress more strongly how important it is for the sperm test to be carried out, it can save months of frustration and anxiety for both partners if male infertility is the problem.
Endometriosis is a complex disorder which can cause a number of disturbing and stressful symptoms and can disrupt the ability to concieve naturally in many various ways. Depending on where the endometriosis is situated it can effect the function of the fallopian tubes to smoothly transfer the oocyte from the ovaries to the fallopian tube and down into the uterus. It can cause excrutiating pain that incapacitates the woman who suffers from this problem during her menstral time.It can have far reaching effects on her own self esteem and upon her relationship with her husband or partner and in the way she sees herself as a woman. Endometriosis is seen in chinese medicine as blood stasis in the lower jiao or reproductive organs and this stagnation needs to be cleared to enable the return to normal function of the ovaries , tubes and uterus, once this has been achieved conception may follow readily with out any further problems, having said that, this can be a disorder that can take some time to eliminate completely, and restore the menstrual cycle to its normal function , I always recommend that a woman visit her Gyneacologist for advice before starting treatments. .
Polyscistic Ovaries are a commonly encountered problem in clinic, from the Chinese Medicine theory PCO's are caused by substantial phlegm and damp.
I have treated this problem with numerous women it can be difficult if the woman has full blown PCO's in that situation I recommend a consultation with her Gynaecologist before starting treatments, if it is a case of border line PCO's although the treatment can take some time to clear the chocolate cysts that cause the blockage to the ovaries , the herbal formula and acupuncture may overcome the problem and help a woman to concieve naturally.
Short follicular stage
Short follicular phase of the cycle, this is the stage at the start of the womans new cycle, when the old endometrium is shed and a new lining is growing once the menses have ceased, this is the stage when the egg producuing follicles are growing and the fertile cervical secretions are being produced. If there is to short a follicular stage in the womans menstrual cycle, the follicles will fail to produce a dominant follicle that is mature enough to release an egg when ovulation is due to happen mid cycle,or you may see an egg released that is not of the best quality for fertilsation to take place and implantation to be successful. In this situation Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine may be helpful in lengthening the follicular stage of the cycle to around 13/14 days.
Ovulation is the transitional stage of a womans cycle, when she passes from her follicular stage or non fertile stage , into her fertile phase of her cycle, this is when the woman will experience an increase in her cervical secretion to the fertile stretchy type mucus that facilitates easy access by her husband or partners sperm through the oss of the cervix and up throught the uterus and into the fallopian tubes where fertilisation takes place. In some womens cycle they show all the signs that ovulation is about to take place, but then the dominant follicle in the ovary just doesn't receive the right amount of FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) to release the egg as it should in a normal cycle. In some cases this can happen every second or third cycle, but in a number of women that I see this can be happening every cycle, if this is the case Acupuncture and Chinese Hebal Medicine may be helpful in stimulating hormone production in the brain which can then reach sufficient levels each cycle to stimulate the follicle to release the egg normally.
Body Temperature Chart
The body temperature chart is a wonderful tool that gives a very clear picture of what is happening right throughout the menstrual cycle. Each morning before getting out of bed the temperature is taken and then registered on the chart for that day, a note is also taken of any unusual occurences have happened, for example feelings of nausea or unusual headaches, tenderness in the breasts etc.At midcycle just prior to ovulation there will be a sudden drop in temperature of between 0.2 to 0.6 of a degree there will also generally be seen a change in the cervical secretions from wet and slippery to a more thicker and stretchy consistancy, these two occurrances indicate ovulation is about to occurr and that this is the most fertile time in the cycle.
Menstrual problems are some thing I deal with on a daily basis in clinic, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture may offer women who are having problems with their monthly cycle a way of regulating and releiving any problems that may be occuring. The sort of problems some women experience are excessive menstrual bleeding that can go on for days, some up to 10 days at a time, other women may experience severe cramping and nausea at the onset of their new monthly cycle, others may not be having normal menstruation at all, and only have a cycle every 3 to 4 months and then only of very short duration of 1 to 2 days of very light bleeding, all these types of irregularities may be treatable with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.
