Insomnia Sleep Disorders

Insomnia is one of the most commonly seen problems in my clinical practice, this is a condition caused by a number of contributing factors, but can also be one of the most debilitating of conditions.

Insomnia effects one in three people at some time in their life, Modern life style, Stress and Anxiety, Work related problems, Personal relationships, Diet and many other factors contribute to this condition.

The Chinese veiw  Insomnia as a disturbance of the Shen, Shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine is the spirit or soul of each of us, one of the functions of the Heart in Traditional Chinese Medicine is to house or hold the Shen securely, any of the above contributing factors can upset the balance of YIN and Yang  and distribution of the Hearts Qi or energy when this occurs the Hearts ability to house the Shen is compromised, this leads to the Shen being disturbed, or unsettled, when this happens the Shen tends to wander at night, disturbing the natural balance in the body, causing restlessness, vivid dreams and the inability to relax and fall asleep easily, the mind never seems to shut down completely and jumps from one thought to the other, making it very difficult to fall asleep with ease. This is the condition seen as Insomnia in the west.

Acupuncture has the ability to calm the Shen , nourish the Heart and restore the Hearts ability to house and contain the Shen properly once again, combined with a  Chinese Herbal Medicine Formula, to alleviate the underlying anxiety this condition gives rise to, generally the results  seen may be amazing in some instances, I have seen people who have said to me it is impossible for me to fall asleep, as soon as the Acupuncture needles have been inserted they may  start to drift of into a deep sleep, I usually leave these people on the treatment table for as long as possible, before removing the needles, upon waking and being told they have been asleep for so long they dont believe it in a lot of instances saying, "that 's impossible", they are generally quite shocked when you tell them what the time is and for just how long they have lain there.

The results achieved with Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine may be very good in most cases.
