Menopause

Menopause

I treat a lot of women suffering debilitating menopausal symptoms with Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture in my clinic at Northern Beaches. Why I resort to these two treatment methods is that they are natural, gradual and gentle, and does not have any side effects. Moreover, the effects are also sustained after the treatment stops.

Menopausal Symptoms

Menopause usually affects women between 48-52 years of age in different ways. Some breeze through with just irregular periods and no periods eventually making them aware of the fact that they're going through menopausal phase in their life whole others are troubled by it for many years.

There are even other frustrating symptoms that one may face like hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, depression, irritability, osteoporosis, weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, vaginal dryness, reduced libido, mood swings, headaches, poor memory, low energy and skin dryness.

Menopausal symptoms occur because of the rapid drop in oestrogen levels; the oestrogen level usually drops as ovaries age. Many women however go for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for replacing the missing oestrogen. HRT undoubtedly produces reliable and fast results but it is associated with endometrial and breast cancer and so I consider Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture treatment to be the most effective alternative for addressing the uncomfortable menopausal symptoms.

Yin/Yang Imbalance

According to TCM, Yin and Yang must both decline at the same time during the ageing process. When either Yang or Yin starts to decline faster than the other, imbalance & unwanted symptoms like those in menopause is what a woman starts experiencing. When Yin declines faster, than there is an apparent excess of Yang in the body. Symptoms women experience in such a situation include sweats, hot flushes, tinnitus, irritability, headaches, dryness and thirst and constipation. But when the opposite happens symptoms like weight gain, fullness, fatigue, bloating, sensitivity to cold and lower back weakness are witnessed.

Treating Menopausal Symptoms With TCM

Although every patient is unique to me and I consider each situation individually, I generally treat menopausal symptoms using Chinese herbs supplemented with acupuncture. My patients have basically noticed improvement in their symptoms within first month of their treatment. The usual treatment course is however of 3-6 months.
