MORNING SICKNESS or worse still constant nausea throughout the entire day, is a condition that may respond positively to acupuncture treatments

ACUPUNCTURE is  can be very beneficial during pregnancy, during the first trimester, Nausea and Vomitting are an unfortunate occurance for some women acupuncture may reduce the effects of "morning sickness" and or "all day sickness" in some severe cases. A six weekly Acupuncture Support Treatment is recommended throughout the pregnancy to help alleviate any problems that may arise, and then at 34 weeks a once  weekly Prebirth Acupuncture Treatment is commenced, these treatments may help to soften the Tendons and Sinews in the Hips and Pelvis,  may help to Soften and Ripen the Cervix so that it may be 1.5 to 2 Centimeters Dilated at 40 weeeks, if the baby goes past the due date , then an Acupuncture Induction Treatment is  available if requested, this is  a Safe and Gentle Alternative to having a Medical Induction done in the hospital.

DIET ADVICE is also given that may help to alleviate the problem of nausea and vomitting during the first trimester.

Threatened Miscarriage

Threatened Miscarriage

Threatened Miscarriage is another area where acupuncture may be helpful to relieve the signs of threatened miscarriage and help with lower abdominal cramping and spotting, most Obstetricians and Gyneacologists adopt a wait and see approach in this situation, and there is really not a great deal that they can offer a women in this unfortunate situation. I have used Acupuncture in a number of instances in my clinic. If at the first signs of a possible threatened miscarriage, signs like lower abdominal cramping, collicky pain refering from the lower abdomen around to the lower back, spotting or bleeding occur, if the woman contacts her Acupuncturist to let him or her know what the symptoms are, their Acupuncturist should then immediately advise their client to contact their GP, Gynaecologist or Obstetrician for medical advice, if there is no alternative offered, then an acupuncture treatment may be offered  to help in the treatment  of a threatened miscarriage, but treatment should start as soon as possible, I advise all my pregnant women clients that if they have even the slightest signs of a threatened misscarriage to call me immediately, it doesnt matter what time of day or what day it is just call me once they have been in touch with their Medical Practitioner, I have gone to my clinic at 5am on a Sunday morning and treated one of my clients. If you are a practitioner who deals with conception , pregancy or fertilty you must expect to be called out at all hours of the day and night in a situation where miscarriage is a possibility, it is imperative that treatment be given as soon as possible if you feel that you may be able to help with signs of a  threatened  miscarriage.

Fluid Retention

Fluid Retention

Fluid Retention, may be treated with Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine and Moxibustion. This condition can be one of the most uncomfortable conditions experienced by a woman in her last trimester of her pregnancy especially during the hot summer months, acupuncture may be beneficial at reducing the swelling in the ankles and feet at this time, with very little or no discomfort at all during treatment.

Breech Babies

Breech Babies

Breech babies are quite commonly seen in clinic, generally they will turn of their own accord by week 32 of the pregnancy, but there are some who need a little help in turning, this done by using a simple procedure involving the use of moxibustion.
The optimum time for turning breech babies is between week 32 and week 36 of the pregnancy, but I have had success as late as 38 weeks on a few occasions.
The expectant mother attends the clinic for a moxibustion session, which involves the use of a moxa stick , which is similar to a candle, but is made from the herb Ai Ye or Mugwort to give it it's english name. Two moxa sticks are used at the same time, both are lit at one end and when they are both smouldering strongly and generating sufficient heat, they are held about two centimeters or 3/4 of an inch from the outer corner of the nail on the little toe, which is an acupunctre point called Zhiyin or Bladder 67.
The heat from the moxa sticks stimulates this acupuncture point which may help make the baby become more active and restless, causing the baby to turn from the breech position to the normal head down position.
Generally a five day treatment cause may see the the baby turn fromthe breech position, but it can take up to ten days with one session a day with the moxa sticks, after the first moxa treatment the mother can do the treatment at home herself or her partner can do it for her.
I give both the mother and father instruction on how to do this safely at home by themselves or with each other, this saves the inconveinience and added expence of attending the clinic on a daily basis to help with the process of the baby  turning back from the breech position. This is a very safe and gentle treatment metthod, which may have positive  results for the mother and baby.
